Licensing vs selling data: what is the difference?
Licensing grants a buyer defined usage rights while the company retains ownership of its data. Selling transfers ownership outright. Reported AI data deals are licenses, not sales.
The difference
- Selling transfers ownership. The buyer can do anything, and the company loses control.
- Licensing grants specific rights — defined uses, defined duration, defined protections — while the company keeps ownership.
Why AI data deals are licenses
Reported agreements — Reddit's $203 million in contracts, publisher deals reported at up to $250 million — are structured as licenses (SEC filing). Companies keep their data and can license it again under agreed terms.
Why it matters for companies
Licensing means the data asset is not consumed by the transaction. A company can earn from the same data more than once, within the terms it accepts.
What this means for partners
Companies you introduce keep ownership of their data. The typical qualifying profile is 50+ full-time employees at peak. If a deal closes and SourceX collects its fee, you earn 25% of that fee, up to $100,000 per company.
