What is data provenance?

Data provenance means knowing where data came from, who consented to its use, and what rights attach to it. Licensed data has provenance; scraped data usually does not.

The definition

Provenance is the documented history of a dataset: where it originated, who owns it, what consent exists, and what uses are permitted.

Why buyers pay for it

  • Legal exposure. Courts are actively weighing scraping claims; undocumented data is a liability (Reuters legal coverage).
  • Model quality. Known origins mean known quality and fewer surprises.
  • Customer trust. Enterprise AI customers increasingly ask where training data came from.

What this means for partners

SourceX structures company data with provenance, consent and anonymization built in — which is what makes it licensable. The typical company profile is 50+ full-time employees at peak. Introduce one; if a deal closes and SourceX collects its fee, you can earn 25% of that fee, up to $100,000 per company.
