Channel partner vs referral partner: what is the difference?

A channel partner resells, implements or co-sells a vendor's offer and usually carries part of the sales or delivery work. A referral partner only introduces a prospect and is paid when the introduction turns into a closed, paid deal. SourceX's partner program is a referral program: you introduce, SourceX runs everything else.

What is the difference between a channel partner and a referral partner?

A channel partner takes part in selling or delivering a vendor's product. A referral partner makes an introduction and stops there. The split is about who does the work after the first conversation: a channel partner keeps working the deal, a referral partner hands it to the vendor.

The terms overlap in everyday speech, and some vendors call every outside seller a "channel partner". The useful test is simple. Ask who negotiates, who contracts, who supports the customer and who gets paid when.

The main types of channel partner

Channel programs usually group partners by the job they do:

  • Resellers and VARs buy from the vendor and sell to the customer, often bundling their own services. They hold the customer contract and the margin.
  • Distributors sit between the vendor and a network of resellers, handling logistics, credit and onboarding.
  • Implementation and services partners configure, migrate and support the product. Their income is mostly services revenue.
  • Managed service providers run the product for the customer on an ongoing basis and bill monthly.
  • Co-sell or alliance partners work the account jointly with the vendor's sales team and share pipeline.
  • Technology or integration partners build connectors between their product and the vendor's.

Every one of these carries some responsibility: inventory, billing, quota, certification, support or delivery.

The pay model follows from the role. Margin and recurring revenue compensate for ongoing work. A one-time reward compensates for opening a door.

Referral partner vs affiliate

An affiliate usually promotes a product to an open audience through a link, and is paid per click, lead or sale. A referral partner makes a personal, qualified introduction to a specific decision-maker. The distinction matters for quality: SourceX does not want lead lists or cold outreach, only introductions from people who can reach a company's owner or executives. The introduction email builder is designed for that kind of one-to-one note.

Where does SourceX's partner program sit?

SourceX's program is a referral program. Partners introduce established US companies that hold valuable operational records, such as years of email, tickets, CRM and finance history. If the company licenses its data through SourceX and the deal closes, the partner earns a share of SourceX's collected fee.

In practice that means:

  1. You introduce a company through a referral form or your referral link, and give basic fit information only.
  2. SourceX qualifies the company on size, history, data breadth and rights.
  3. The company completes a data inventory, and price and terms are agreed with the company directly.
  4. AI labs and data buyers review the opportunity, and a signed deal leads to delivery and payment to the company.
  5. After SourceX receives its fee, the partner reward becomes payable.

There is no reselling, no implementation work, no certification and no data handling on the partner side. Partners never export, upload or describe confidential records.

How the reward works for a referral partner

Partners earn 25% of the eligible platform fees SourceX actually collects from the referred company's licensing deals, capped at $100,000 cumulative per referred company. The reward is payable only after the buyer pays and SourceX receives its fee; a lead, meeting or signed agreement alone does not trigger payment, and no reward is guaranteed. The reward is a share of SourceX's fee and is never deducted from what the company receives. Full details are on the rewards page and in the program terms.

If you also hold a channel relationship with a software vendor, the two do not conflict by default, but read both sets of terms. Compare the payment models in one-time referral reward vs recurring revenue share.

Which should you be?

Choose a channel role when you want to build a business around a vendor's product and are willing to carry delivery. Choose a referral role when you already advise or serve companies and simply know who should talk to whom. Some advisors and consultants do both: they implement software for clients and refer opportunities that fall outside their service line, as long as each program's terms allow it.

To see how the referral role plays out in specific ecosystems, read the playbooks for Acumatica partners, Google Workspace partners and Atlassian solution partners. To think through who in your network fits, use the network opportunity finder.

Next step

If the referral model fits how you work, register as a partner. Check the who qualifies page first so your introductions match the baseline: US companies with 50+ full-time employees at peak (contractors excluded).

  3. Step 3Buyer selects and paysThe buyer selects and pays for the data and SourceX receives its fee.

Common questions

Can one company be both a channel partner and a referral partner?

Yes. Many consultancies resell or implement one vendor's software and also refer opportunities outside that product line. Keep the roles separate in your records, read each program's terms for exclusivity or conflict language, and tell clients plainly when you have a financial interest in a recommendation.

Does a referral partner need a contract with the vendor?

Usually yes, in the form of program terms that set out attribution, payment trigger and conduct rules. For SourceX, details beyond the published reward facts are set by the signed agreement and the published terms, so read those before you make introductions.

Is a referral partner the same as a lead generator?

No. A lead generator sells or passes along contact lists in volume. A referral partner makes a personal introduction to a decision-maker they can actually reach. SourceX does not want lead lists or cold outreach, and credit goes to the first valid referrer whose introduction leads to a verified company application.

Do referral partners get paid recurring commission?

That depends on the program. Under SourceX's program the reward is a share of eligible platform fees actually collected from the referred company's licensing deals, capped per referred company, and payable only after the buyer pays and SourceX receives its fee. Nothing is paid for a lead or meeting alone.

Do referral partners have to be based in the United States?

No. Anyone can join from any supported country, but the companies you introduce must be US companies. Licensed professionals such as lawyers, CPAs or registered representatives should check their own rules on referral fees and disclosure before accepting any reward.
