How AI buyers evaluate a dataset before buying

Before purchasing, AI buyers evaluate datasets on provenance, quality, coverage, rights documentation and preparation quality — criteria that determine whether company data is licensable.

The evaluation criteria

Reporting on AI data deals and industry practice point to a consistent checklist:

  • Provenance. Where did the data come from, and who consented?
  • Rights. Does the seller have authority to license it?
  • Quality. Is it real, complete and representative of actual work?
  • Coverage. How many records, over what period, in which languages?
  • Preparation. Is it anonymized, structured and documented?

Why preparation decides outcomes

Raw exports rarely pass. Data that has been assessed, anonymized and structured — the work SourceX does — is what clears buyer review.

What this means for partners

You do not need to evaluate data yourself. Introduce a qualifying company — typically 50+ full-time employees at peak — and SourceX handles assessment onward. If a deal closes and SourceX collects its fee, you earn 25% of that fee, up to $100,000 per company.
