Data Opportunity Handoff Checklist for Portfolio Reviews

A data opportunity handoff checklist for portfolio reviews should confirm the company meets SourceX's baseline, possesses licensing rights, has an authorized sponsor, and clarifies the data archive types available. It's crucial that partners never handle or transfer company data directly.

Portfolio operating teams play a crucial role in identifying new opportunities for their portfolio companies. When it comes to data licensing, a structured approach ensures efficiency and alignment with partner programs like SourceX. This checklist is designed to help your team quickly assess and prepare a company for referral, focusing on the key information SourceX needs.

Why Use a Handoff Checklist?

A clear checklist streamlines the referral process, ensuring that critical information is gathered upfront. This not only saves time for your portfolio companies but also ensures they align with the requirements for successful data licensing opportunities. Our program, for instance, focuses on connecting US companies with AI labs and data buyers, where data can be licensed for model training and other enterprise uses.

Your Data Opportunity Handoff Checklist

Use this checklist during your portfolio reviews to identify and prepare companies for potential data licensing opportunities with SourceX.

Company Profile Assessment

  • US-based company: Confirm the company is incorporated and operates in the United States. (Refer to F06)
  • Employee count: Does the company have 50 or more full-time employees at its peak? Note: This excludes contractors. (Refer to F06)
  • Operating history: Does the company have years of operating records? This typically indicates a robust data history. (Refer to F06)
  • Industry fit (Illustrative): Consider if the company operates in sectors known for generating valuable data, such as finance, healthcare, automotive, or retail. SourceX is the enterprise data transaction layer for AI, managing data licensing from sourcing and rights review to delivery and payment. (Refer to F09)

Data Licensing Rights & Archival

  • Rights to license: Confirm the company has clear and indisputable rights to license the data it holds. This is fundamental for any licensing deal. (Refer to F06)
  • Authorized sponsor: Identify an authorized sponsor within the company who has the authority to approve data licensing and can act as the primary point of contact for the process. (Refer to F06)
  • Archive types: What types of data archives are available? Consider structured databases, unstructured text, imagery, audio, or video. Understand the volume and format of these archives.
  • Data quality & consent: While SourceX handles deep dives into data quality and consent, an initial understanding of the company's data governance practices can be helpful.

Important Considerations for Partners

  • No data handling by partners: Partners should never handle or transfer any company data directly. Your role is solely to make the introduction. SourceX manages the entire data licensing process. (This is a core operational rule for partners, not explicitly a fact ID but implied by the referral model).
  • Reward structure: Understand how rewards work. Partners earn 25% of the eligible platform fees SourceX actually collects from the referred company's licensing deals, capped at $100,000 cumulative per referred company. Rewards become payable only after the buyer pays and SourceX receives its fee. (Refer to F01, F02, F03)
  • Attribution rules: Credit for a referral goes to the first valid referrer whose introduction leads to a verified company application within the attribution window. (Refer to F04)

By systematically using this checklist, your team can efficiently identify strong candidates for data licensing, ensuring a smooth and productive referral process for your portfolio companies and for SourceX.
