The limits of synthetic training data
Synthetic data — text generated by AI models themselves — is useful but has documented limits, which is why buyers keep paying for real licensed and operational data.
The promise and the problem
Synthetic data is cheap and infinite. But research and industry reporting document real limits:
- Model collapse. Training heavily on model-generated text can degrade quality over generations.
- Missing grounding. Synthetic data reflects what models already know — not new, real-world work.
- Evaluation validity. You cannot fairly test a model on data a similar model invented.
Why real data keeps its value
Real operational data — actual tickets, calls, documents and outcomes — grounds models in reality. That is why, even as synthetic data grows, reported licensing deals keep getting signed (Reuters).
What this means for partners
Real company data is the complement synthetic data cannot replace. Companies with 50+ full-time employees at peak are the typical suppliers. Introduce one to SourceX; if a deal closes and SourceX collects its fee, you can earn 25% of that fee, up to $100,000 per company.
- Step 1Share your linkSend your personal link to a company you know.
- Step 2Company appliesThe company applies itself at /apply.
- Step 3Buyer selects and paysThe buyer selects and pays for the data and SourceX receives its fee.
- Step 4You get your rewardYour share of SourceX fees becomes payable.
