There is no published industry minimum dataset size. What buyers consistently seek, based on reporting and industry practice, is:
- Volume — enough records to train or evaluate against.
- History — multiple years, showing variation over time.
- Breadth — data across more than one system or function.
Why the 50-employee heuristic works
A company with 50+ full-time employees at peak generates thousands of support tickets, sales conversations, documents and transactions every year — across multiple systems. A few years of normal operations typically produces licensable volume without any special effort.
What matters more than size
Provenance, rights, realism and anonymization. A smaller, well-documented dataset of real work can be worth more than a huge messy one.
