How to calculate an illustrative referral commission from a platform fee
Take the eligible platform fee SourceX collects, multiply by the program rate, and apply the per-company cap across all installments.
The method
- Start from the platform fee SourceX actually collects on the deal, not the total deal value. SourceX's fee varies by agreement.
- Remove anything that is not eligible fee: supplier payments, taxes, pass-through reimbursements, refunds and chargebacks.
- Multiply the remaining fee by the program rate (25%).
- Add up rewards already earned for the same company. The total across all installments cannot exceed $100,000.
Worked structure (illustrative)
Illustrative: use the referral earnings calculator and enter a hypothetical deal value and fee percentage. It shows the fee collected, your share, and where the cap applies, using the currently published program.
Common mistakes
- Applying the rate to the full deal value.
- Assuming every agreement uses the same fee percentage.
- Counting an estimate as earned before the buyer's payment is received.
Estimated, eligible, approved, paid
An estimate is not an earning. A reward becomes eligible after the fee is collected, then needs approval, and shows as paid only once a payout is recorded.
