AI and data readiness

AI readiness assessment

AI readiness is how prepared a company is to use AI in real work: clear use cases, organized and accessible data, governance over what data may be used, systems that connect, and someone accountable for results. Answer ten questions for a score out of 100 and three prioritized next actions.

Ten questions

Use cases

Has the company written down specific tasks AI should help with?

Is there an expected outcome for each use case?

Data organization

Can staff find the documents and records a use case needs?

Are key records kept in consistent formats?

Governance

Is there a written policy on which data staff may use with AI tools?

Are access permissions to sensitive records reviewed?

Systems and workflows

Do core systems export or connect to other tools?

Has an AI tool been tried inside a real workflow?

Ownership and measurement

Is one person accountable for AI adoption?

Are results from AI tools measured?

Inputs

Ten questions
Two per dimension. Each answer is worth 0, 5 or 10 points.
Not sure
Available on every question. Kept as unknown, scored 0 and listed for follow-up.

Outputs

Score out of 100
Sum of all answers.
Dimension breakdown
Points out of 20 per dimension.
Completeness
Share of questions answered with a definite answer. Below 100% the result is provisional.
Next actions
The three lowest-scoring items, in question order on ties.

How it is calculated

Rubric: the first option is 0 points, the second 5, the third 10. Five dimensions × two questions × 10 points = 100.

  • Use cases: Has the company written down specific tasks AI should help with? (No = 0 / Ideas, not written down = 0 / Yes, prioritized list = 10)
  • Use cases: Is there an expected outcome for each use case? (No = 0 / Rough idea = 0 / Yes, a measurable target = 10)
  • Data organization: Can staff find the documents and records a use case needs? (Rarely = 0 / With effort = 0 / Easily, in known systems = 10)
  • Data organization: Are key records kept in consistent formats? (No = 0 / Partly = 0 / Mostly = 10)
  • Governance: Is there a written policy on which data staff may use with AI tools? (No = 0 / Informal guidance = 0 / Written and shared = 10)
  • Governance: Are access permissions to sensitive records reviewed? (Never = 0 / Occasionally = 0 / On a schedule = 10)
  • Systems and workflows: Do core systems export or connect to other tools? (No = 0 / Manual exports = 0 / Yes, documented exports or APIs = 10)
  • Systems and workflows: Has an AI tool been tried inside a real workflow? (No = 0 / Individual experiments = 0 / Yes, in a team workflow = 10)
  • Ownership and measurement: Is one person accountable for AI adoption? (No = 0 / Shared, informally = 0 / Yes, named owner = 10)
  • Ownership and measurement: Are results from AI tools measured? (No = 0 / Anecdotally = 0 / Yes, tracked = 10)

Bands: 75–100 Prepared, 45–74 Developing, 0–44 Early. Bands describe operational preparation, not legal compliance or guaranteed commercial results.

Worked example (illustrative)

Illustrative only: a company with a prioritized use-case list (10), rough outcomes (5), records that are hard to find (0), partly consistent formats (5), a written AI policy (10) and similar answers elsewhere might score around 50, "Developing", with next actions on data organization first.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Self-reported answers; nothing is verified.
  • A high score is not legal or regulatory compliance.
  • AI adoption readiness is separate from data licensing readiness. For licensing, use the data licensing eligibility checker.

Questions and answers

What is an AI readiness assessment?

A structured check of whether a company has the use cases, data, governance, systems and ownership needed to adopt AI in day-to-day work.

How is the score calculated?

Ten questions, each worth 0, 5 or 10 points under the published rubric, for a total out of 100.

What happens if I answer Not sure?

The answer stays unknown, scores 0, and the result is marked provisional with those items listed for follow-up.

Does a high score mean we are compliant?

No. The bands describe operational preparation only.

How long does it take?

About three minutes.

Is this the same as data licensing readiness?

No. Licensing readiness depends on record depth, rights and executive interest. That is a separate, optional assessment.

Is my data stored?

No. The assessment runs in your browser.
