Company data readiness survey

A structured self-assessment for companies considering licensing their data: four sections covering data rights, data maturity, technical exportability and internal readiness. Each answer maps to a plain next step. The method is fully published on this page — no scoring black box, and no result is a guarantee of qualification.

Before a company applies to license its data, it helps to know where it stands. This survey is a self-assessment any company can work through in about fifteen minutes. The method is published here in full — there is no hidden scoring.

How to use it

Answer each question honestly, as a company. Where an answer is "no" or "unsure," the note under it is the next step. A strong set of answers means the company is likely ready to apply; weak answers point at what to fix first. No result guarantees qualification — SourceX makes that call during evaluation.

Section 1: Data rights

  1. Does the company own or clearly control the data it would license? If the data belongs to customers or third parties, licensing needs their terms addressed first.
  2. Are there existing exclusive agreements covering this data? An exclusive license already granted can block a new deal.
  3. Has legal reviewed whether licensing this data is permitted? If not, that review is the first task — it is a normal part of the process.
  4. Is there someone who can sign a licensing agreement? Without signing authority, nothing closes.

Section 2: Data maturity

  1. How many years of history does the data cover? Multi-year coverage is substantially more valuable than months.
  2. Is the data still being generated? Growing datasets sustain deals; static archives are a harder sell.
  3. Is the data organized enough to describe? If nobody can say what the data contains, cataloguing comes first.

Section 3: Technical exportability

  1. Can the data be exported in standard formats? Data locked in a system with no export path needs an engineering answer before licensing.
  2. How large is the dataset, roughly? Substantial volume matters; a rough figure is fine.
  3. Are there privacy or confidentiality constraints on export? These are solvable, but they must be known upfront.

Section 4: Internal readiness

  1. Is there a senior sponsor who wants this to happen? Deals need a champion with authority.
  2. Has leadership discussed data monetization? If the conversation has not happened internally, start there.
  3. Could the company respond to diligence questions within weeks? Slow answers stall evaluations.

Reading your answers

  • Mostly confident yes: the company is likely ready — apply and let evaluation confirm it.
  • Mixed: fix the "no" answers first; each note tells you how.
  • Mostly no or unsure: the groundwork comes before any application.
