What is first-party data in AI licensing?

First-party data is data a company collected directly through its own operations. Because the company holds clear authority over it, it is the most straightforward category to license.

The definition

First-party data is what a company generates and collects itself: its support tickets, sales records, documents, transactions and internal communications. It contrasts with:

  • Second-party data — obtained from a partner.
  • Third-party data — aggregated or purchased from external sources.

Why it matters for licensing

  • Clear authority. The company that created the data is best positioned to license it.
  • Documented origin. First-party data comes with known provenance.
  • Buyer preference. Clean rights chains reduce legal risk (Reuters legal coverage).

What this means for partners

The operational data of any established company is first-party data. Companies with 50+ full-time employees at peak typically hold years of it. Introduce one to SourceX; if a deal closes and SourceX collects its fee, you earn 25% of that fee, up to $100,000 per company.
