How to assess a company with both original and licensed content
When assessing a company with both original and licensed content for referral, prioritize material the company itself created and owns, ensuring it has clear rights to license it. Data derived from third-party sources or content merely redistributed without significant transformation is usually not eligible.
How to Assess Companies with Original and Licensed Content
Many businesses utilize a mix of proprietary operational data and third-party licensed content. When identifying potential referral partners for SourceX, it's crucial to distinguish between these categories to determine eligibility for data licensing programs.
The core principle is simple: SourceX seeks to license data that the company itself created, owns, and has clear, unencumbered rights to license. Material sourced from or licensed by third parties typically does not qualify.
Focus on Proprietary Operational Data
Original, proprietary operational data is the gold standard for SourceX buyer programs. This includes information generated through a company's internal operations, processes, and expertise. When evaluating a potential referral, look for:
Internal Knowledge Bases: Documentation of unique processes, methodologies, and expertise developed in-house. Operating Procedures (SOPs): Detailed guides on how the company performs its core functions. Project Histories: Records of past projects, including challenges, solutions, and outcomes unique to the company's work. Quality Assurance (QA) Records: Data from internal testing, quality control, and performance monitoring. Customer Support Workflows: Aggregated, anonymized data from support interactions, FAQs, and resolution processes. Employee-Generated Content: Training materials, internal reports, or research created by employees as part of their work.
These types of data reflect the company's unique operational insights and intellectual property, making them highly valuable to AI buyers seeking to understand real-world business processes and outcomes.
What Does Not Qualify (Typically)
Most content that a company licenses from or merely distributes for third parties is generally not eligible for SourceX programs. This includes:
Third-Party Licensed Content: Material the company pays to use, such as stock images, syndicated articles, or software libraries, where the company is not the original creator or owner. Scraped or Publicly Available Data: Information gathered from the internet or public sources without significant proprietary transformation or aggregation. Client Data: Information belonging to the company's clients, even if the company processes it. The client typically owns this data, and SourceX requires the data owner to grant licensing rights. ([See Who Qualifies for more details](/who-qualifies)). Resale of Data Products: If the company's primary business is reselling data from other providers, that data is not suitable.
Illustrative: A marketing agency might use licensed stock photography and also generate original campaign performance reports for its clients. The stock photography is not eligible. The anonymized, aggregated, and proprietary insights from their own campaign management processes and reports, however, could be valuable.
Key Assessment Questions for Mixed Content Companies
When you encounter a company with both types of content, ask:
- Is this material created and owned by the company? It's essential that the company has the legal right to license the data without breaching contracts or confidentiality.
- Does it represent the company's unique operational insights or expertise? Is it a byproduct of their internal processes or intellectual effort?
- Is it a raw input or a transformed output? Raw data from third-party sources is rarely eligible; highly processed, anonymized, and aggregated insights derived from internal operations are usually preferred.
If you are unsure whether a specific type of content qualifies, encourage the company to discuss their data assets with SourceX. Our evaluation process will determine the relevance and licensability of their data to current buyer programs.
Remember, your role as a partner is to make an introduction to an eligible business, not to export or upload any company data yourself. The company will decide what scope of data it is willing to provide under an agreement with SourceX. For a preliminary, non-binding check, use the company fit checker.
Rewards are calculated as 25% of SourceX's eligible collected platform fees, capped at $100,000 per referred company. A lead, meeting or signed agreement alone does not trigger payment. See the program terms.
