Referral partner vs reseller vs channel partner: which model fits a data-licensing introduction

A referral partner introduces a company and steps back, while a reseller buys, sells and supports a product on its own paper. At SourceX, a data-licensing introduction can only be a referral: the company signs its own license, keeps ownership of its data, and is paid directly while SourceX handles the deal.

Which model fits a data-licensing introduction?

A data-licensing introduction is a referral, not a resale. The company signs its own license, keeps ownership of its records, and is paid directly; the partner introduces the company and SourceX runs the deal. If you are used to margin on resold subscriptions, nothing here is resold, so there is no margin to mark up.

That distinction matters most to managed service providers, ERP and CRM implementers and agencies, who already live with several partner structures at once. This page maps the common models side by side so you can see where a SourceX introduction lands, and what that means for your contracts, your client relationships and your own paperwork.

The right-hand columns are typical industry patterns, not claims about any specific vendor program. Your own agreements govern your other partnerships.

Why can a data-licensing introduction only be a referral?

Three facts about how SourceX works rule out resale.

  1. The company is the licensor. The company agrees price and terms and signs; nothing is binding until it does. A partner cannot sign for it or hold the license in between.
  2. The asset is not inventory. Records are licensed, not sold, and the company keeps ownership. There is nothing for a partner to buy, stock, bundle or white-label.
  3. The partner never touches the records. Partners make introductions and give basic fit information only. They do not export, upload or describe confidential records, so there is no delivery layer to resell.

The partner reward is a share of SourceX's fee. It is never deducted from what the company receives, which is paid one all-in price with no separate charges. The what is a SourceX referral partner page describes the role in plain terms.

What is the difference between an agent, a reseller and a referral partner?

The words overlap in practice, so use the legal and operational test rather than the label.

  • Reseller: buys or licenses from a vendor and sells on its own paper. Carries margin and often support risk.
  • Agent or channel partner: represents the vendor and may negotiate or close, usually under an agency or commission agreement.
  • Introducer or referral partner: connects two parties and steps back. Does not negotiate, represent either side or handle the product.

If a program asks you to quote prices, redline contracts or handle records, it is asking for more than an introduction. SourceX asks for none of that. Rules for some licensed professions and regulated activities treat negotiating or facilitating a transaction differently from introducing; check your own rules rather than assuming the label settles it.

When does each model win for an MSP or implementer?

Pick the model by what your client relationship and your risk appetite allow.

SituationBetter fitReason
You bundle a vendor's tool into your managed service and bill monthlyResellerYou deliver and support it, so you earn margin for that work
You advise a client on a vendor choice and the vendor pays you for closed dealsAgent or commission partnerYou influence the decision and are paid on the result
A client mentions years of ticket, project and billing records and has no plan for themReferral partnerYou can introduce a decision-maker without taking on delivery or liability

For MSPs specifically, the referral opportunities for managed service providers page explains which client records tend to qualify. A good signal is a client with 50+ full-time employees at peak (contractors excluded) whose PSA, ticketing, documentation and finance systems go back several years.

How do contracts and client trust change?

Resale agreements usually give you obligations: minimum commitments, support levels, brand rules. A referral gives you few, and the signed partner agreement and published terms control the details; do not assume tiers, bonuses or minimums that are not published.

On trust, the benefit of a referral is that you are not the party recommending a product you will then be paid to deliver. Still, tell the contact you may receive a reward, and let them decide. If your firm or profession limits referral compensation, read how to make an introduction when you can't accept a referral fee and your firm's own policy, such as the one described in setting a referral fee policy for your advisory firm.

How do credit and proof work compared with a resale deal?

In resale, the order record proves who sold. In a referral, credit goes to the first valid referrer whose introduction leads to a verified company application within the attribution window. Keep a dated record of who you introduced, to whom and how; the guide on how to prove a referral covers what to keep.

A partner's referral link sends the company to sourcex.si/apply with the referral code attached, so the company can apply itself while credit is preserved. You can also submit the company through the referral form.

How does the reward compare with resale margin?

Partners earn 25% of the eligible platform fees SourceX actually collects from the referred company's licensing deals, capped at $100,000 cumulative per referred company. It becomes payable only after the buyer pays and SourceX receives its fee. A lead, meeting or signed agreement alone does not trigger payment, and no reward is guaranteed.

Unlike resale margin, it is not earned at any stage before payment, so a lead, meeting or signed agreement earns nothing on its own. Ask your own adviser how to report any reward you receive. See the rewards page for current details.

When is a referral the wrong fit?

Skip the introduction when the records belong to your client's own clients without consent, when the data is mainly consumer personal data or protected health information with no licensing basis, when the company has fewer full-time staff than the 50+ at peak baseline, or when no one with authority will consider an exclusive license for an agreed term. Confirm the headcount first using the guide to finding a private company's employee count.

If a client or contact fits, use the introduction email builder to draft an owner-approved note, read how it works, and register as a partner to get your referral link.

Common questions

Do referral partners sell anything to the company?

No. A referral partner introduces a company and gives basic fit information. The company decides whether to apply, agrees price and terms with SourceX, and signs its own agreement. The partner does not quote prices, negotiate, sign for the company or handle any records, so there is nothing for the partner to sell.

Can an MSP or agency white-label the SourceX process?

No. The company contracts directly with SourceX and the buyer, and SourceX handles inventory, rights review, contracting and delivery. There is no white-label or resale layer. Partners make introductions through a referral link or the referral form, and the signed partner agreement defines the relationship.

How is a referral reward different from reseller margin?

Reseller margin is earned on a sale you make. A referral reward is a share of the eligible platform fees SourceX actually collects from the referred company, capped per company, and payable only after the buyer pays and SourceX receives its fee. It is never deducted from the company's proceeds, and no reward is guaranteed.

Is a referral partner the same as an affiliate?

Not quite. Affiliate programs usually pay for clicks or leads from public links. SourceX wants warm introductions to a company's owner, CEO, CFO or authorized representative, because the deal needs a decision-maker. The referral link preserves credit, but the aim is an introduction to a qualified company, not traffic.

Does being a referral partner create obligations to my client?

It can create professional or contractual obligations of your own, such as disclosure of any reward and your firm's conflict policies. SourceX does not require you to represent or advise the client. Tell the contact you may receive a reward, let them decide, and follow your own agreements and rules.
