Illustrative case study: an accepted company data package

A hypothetical example of scoping, clearing rights and delivering operational material. Not a real company or result.

The situation

A mid-sized software company keeps support escalation runbooks, release checklists and an internal knowledge base built up over several years.

Step 1: Inventory, not export

The company lists where its material lives using descriptions only — system, type, years covered, format and owner — similar to the data inventory builder. No records are shared at this stage.

Step 2: Rights and sensitivity

They separate material they created from anything containing customer details or third-party content. Personal data is excluded.

Step 3: Scoping

SourceX and the company agree on a scope matched to an active buyer program: which categories, which years, which formats.

Step 4: Preparation and delivery

The company prepares the agreed material under the licensing agreement. The buyer reviews it and accepts the package.

Step 5: Payment

The buyer pays, the company receives its licensing proceeds and SourceX collects its platform fee. If the company was referred, the partner's reward becomes eligible.

Lessons

  • A clear inventory makes scoping faster
  • Removing personal and third-party data early avoids delays
  • Acceptance and payment, not the signed agreement, complete the deal
