How commercial insurance brokers can refer clients for data licensing
Commercial insurance brokers can join SourceX's referral program by introducing US clients that had 50+ full-time employees at peak (contractors excluded) and hold years of operational records. Clear your state's insurance rules and your agency's policy first, keep the introduction apart from any policy or renewal, and screen with fresh questions, never with information from an application.
The short answer for commercial lines producers
You can introduce commercial clients to SourceX as a referral partner, provided the introduction stands completely apart from the insurance relationship. Before you register, settle two questions: what your state's insurance rules and your agency's compensation policy say about payments outside insurance, and how you will keep the idea from looking like an inducement to place or renew coverage.
The opportunity itself is simple to explain. SourceX manages data licensing for established companies, from rights review and inventory to pricing, buyer review, contracting and delivery. The client licenses its business records to AI labs and data buyers, is paid once and remains the owner. Your part ends at the introduction.
Why brokers already sit in the right seat
Few outside advisors see an operating company from as many angles every year as its commercial broker. The renewal cycle gives you a standing meeting with the CFO, controller or risk manager. Workers' compensation and EPLI conversations tell you roughly how many people the company employs, property and fleet schedules show how it operates, and the cyber discussion reveals which systems hold its history.
That knowledge was shared to get the account underwritten, which sets the boundary for everything below. Use it to decide which clients deserve a separate conversation. Never use it as the content of a referral.
Which accounts in your book fit
The best candidates are businesses whose daily work leaves a long, connected trail in their own systems.
| Account type | What to listen for | Why AI buyers care |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering, architecture and consulting firms | Years of proposals, project files, design reviews and QA sign-offs | Expert decisions with documented outcomes |
| IT services firms and MSPs | Ticket histories, runbooks, change records, client documentation they own | Multi-step technical work with resolutions |
| Trucking, logistics and distribution | Dispatch systems, exception handling, warehouse and customer service records | Operational decisions under real constraints |
| Construction contractors | RFIs, change orders, daily logs, submittals, punch lists | Project workflows from bid to closeout |
| B2B software companies | Code repositories, issue trackers, support tickets, product specs | Engineering and support work linked to results |
| Staffing and professional services firms | CRM, placement and engagement records, internal knowledge bases | Repeatable service workflows across many clients |
Whatever the account type, the client needs 50+ full-time employees at peak (contractors excluded), a documented operating record stretching back several years, clear rights to its own records, and a sponsor with authority to sign, whether the owner, CEO, CFO or an authorized representative. The who qualifies page sets it out in full.
The 4C screen before you say a word
Run four checks on any account before mentioning SourceX. A single no means you wait or skip it.
- Coverage-free: the conversation is not tied to placing, renewing or pricing any policy, and no premium, commission or service level depends on it.
- Confidential-clean: nothing from applications, loss runs, statements of values, cyber supplementals or underwriter correspondence will be used or passed on.
- Consent: the client agrees before anyone outside your agency hears its name, and you disclose in writing any reward you may receive.
- Candidate fit: the client confirms the baseline in its own words when you ask fresh questions, not because you read it in a submission.
The questions in our cyber insurance renewal guide show which conversations tend to surface long record histories. Treat them as prompts for talking with the client, never as a way to mine a completed application.
Check anti-rebating and agency rules first
Insurance is regulated state by state, so the first call is to your compliance lead, not to SourceX. State insurance codes commonly restrict rebates and other inducements connected to selling insurance, and states differ on how they treat value-added services offered to commercial clients. The practical rule that follows: never present a SourceX introduction in a proposal, renewal presentation, stewardship report or marketing piece as a service of your agency, and never let it depend on where coverage is placed.
The reward runs the other way, from SourceX to you, which raises a different question: whether a licensed producer may accept compensation for a non-insurance introduction, and whether that income belongs to you or to the agency under your producer agreement. Answers vary by state and by employer, and our explainer on whether insurance agents can earn referral fees outside insurance walks through what to ask. Brokerages that belong to larger platforms can have outside-activity and gift policies that settle the question before any state rule does.
This is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Confirm with your own counsel, tax adviser or professional body before acting.
Questions clients will bring back to you
Once a client starts exploring a license, the broker often gets the follow-up questions. Two come up most.
Does a license change our coverage? That depends on the policy wording and the carrier. The client should review it before signing, and our explainer on whether licensing data affects cyber or D&O coverage lists the points to raise. Redaction and de-identification rules are settled with the client up front, and delivery waits for a signed agreement and the client's go-ahead.
What about promises in our privacy policy? The FTC's technology staff wrote in January 2024 that a company's promises not to use customer data for undisclosed purposes, such as training models, are enforceable wherever they were made. A February 2024 staff post added that quietly rewriting terms to permit AI training after the fact may be unfair or deceptive. Clients whose notices make such promises need any license scoped around them, which is a job for their counsel and SourceX's rights review, not for the broker.
When to raise it in the renewal cycle
| Point in the cycle | Raise it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Renewal strategy meeting and submission preparation | No | Every word at this stage is about the placement |
| Marketing to carriers and presenting quotes | No | A non-insurance offer here can look like an inducement |
| Binding and policy delivery | No | Keep the close about coverage |
| Post-binding stewardship or annual service meeting | Yes, as a separate item after insurance business is finished | Coverage is settled and you are discussing the business itself |
| Mid-term call where the client mentions a system migration | Yes | Old platforms and archives are about to disappear |
| Client plans a sale, merger or wind-down | Yes, alongside its deal counsel | Decisions about records are made in these windows |
| A claim or coverage dispute is open | No | Anything extra can look self-serving |
Prospects you are trying to win are off limits entirely. A licensing introduction is never a sales hook for an account.
How the introduction works for a broker
- Agree with your agency whether you or the agency registers, then register as a SourceX partner.
- Raise the idea with the decision-maker in its own conversation, after the insurance business is done.
- Send your referral link so the client applies at sourcex.si/apply itself, or submit the referral form with the client's permission and only the basic fit details it agreed to share.
- SourceX reviews size, operating history, breadth of records and rights directly with the client.
- The client completes a data inventory: which systems exist, how many years each covers, what can be exported.
- Price and terms are agreed with the client as one all-in figure before buyers see anything, and nothing is binding until the client signs.
- Buyers review; once the client is deal-ready, they typically respond within about two weeks.
- The license is signed, the records are prepared and delivered, and the client is paid; your reward follows after SourceX receives its fee.
What to say after the renewal is bound
Keep it short, make it optional and separate it from coverage in the first sentence.
An account manager can send the same idea as a brief email after the stewardship meeting, with a line disclosing that you may receive a referral reward if the client goes ahead.
How the reward works for producers
Partners earn 25% of the eligible platform fees SourceX actually collects from the referred company's licensing deals, capped at $100,000 per referred company. Rewards become payable only after the buyer pays and SourceX receives its fee; an introduction, meeting or signed agreement alone does not trigger payment, and no reward is guaranteed.
The reward comes out of SourceX's fee, never out of the client's proceeds, and it has nothing to do with premium or commission. Decide with your principal before the first introduction whether income goes to you or the agency, so attribution and paperwork match your producer agreement.
Accounts to leave alone
- Healthcare providers whose records are mainly protected health information.
- Clients whose records mostly belong to their own customers, such as outsourcers and payroll processors, unless those customers consent.
- Accounts that never had 50+ full-time employees at peak, contractors excluded.
- Clients that deleted archives or let systems lapse without an export.
- Businesses controlled by a court, trustee or assignee that has not been involved.
- Clients that have already licensed the same records for AI training.
Next step
List five accounts you will see at post-binding meetings this quarter and run each through the 4C screen; the network opportunity finder helps with the rest of your book. When your compliance lead has signed off, register as a partner and send your link, or ask a client to apply directly at sourcex.si/apply. The page for SBA lenders and loan brokers shows how another regulated advisor keeps the same separation.
- Step 1Share your linkSend your personal link to a company you know.
- Step 2Company appliesThe company applies itself at /apply.
- Step 3Buyer selects and paysThe buyer selects and pays for the data and SourceX receives its fee.
- Step 4You get your rewardYour share of SourceX fees becomes payable.
Common questions
Is accepting a SourceX referral reward a form of insurance rebating?
Rebating rules are generally aimed at value given to an insurance buyer to induce a purchase, while this reward is paid by SourceX to a partner for a business introduction. That difference does not settle the question on its own, because some states regulate producer compensation broadly and producer agreements may claim outside income. Ask your state insurance department or counsel, and keep the introduction unconnected to any policy.
Can I list SourceX in a renewal proposal as a value-added service?
Avoid it. Putting the introduction in a proposal, stewardship report or agency marketing ties it to the placement, which is exactly what inducement rules and agency policies look at. Raise it separately after the insurance business is finished, present it as optional and unrelated to coverage, and disclose in writing any reward you may receive if the client goes ahead.
What if I already know the client's systems from its cyber application?
Use that knowledge only to decide whether to start a conversation. Ask the client fresh questions about headcount at peak, years of records and the systems it runs, and let the client describe its own situation. Nothing from an application, loss run or underwriter correspondence should be passed to SourceX, and the referral link lets the client apply without you sharing anything.
Should the agency or the individual producer register as the partner?
That depends on your producer agreement and your agency's policy on outside compensation, so settle it before the first introduction. Registration is open to individuals and firms. Credit belongs to whichever valid referrer introduced the company first, measured by a verified application, so registering under the wrong name can start an argument later about who earned the reward.
Will a data license make the client harder to insure?
There is no general answer; it turns on policy wording and each carrier's view. The client should review its cyber, D&O and E&O policies with you before signing and ask whether any notice is required. SourceX agrees de-identification and redaction rules with the company before work begins and delivers nothing without an executed agreement, which gives the client concrete facts to share with its carriers.
