How ACG chapter members can bring data licensing to middle-market owners
ACG members can use data licensing as a business development idea that competes with no one's mandate: introduce middle-market owners and portfolio companies with 50+ full-time employees at peak and years of operational records to SourceX. One sponsor, lender or banker relationship can surface several eligible companies, and each company decides for itself.
Why data licensing works as an ACG conversation
ACG chapter members can use data licensing as a business development idea because it competes with no one's mandate. It is not financing, a sale, an audit or an operating engagement: it is a one-time license of a company's operational records to AI labs and data buyers, run by SourceX, with the company keeping ownership of its data. A sponsor, lender or banker can hear it without feeling you are after their business.
It also scales the way ACG relationships do. Most people you meet at a chapter breakfast sit above several companies: a deal partner above a portfolio, a lender above a borrower book, a banker above a pipeline of owners. One useful conversation can lead to more than one introduction.
The timing helps. Bain's Global Private Equity Report 2026 counts about 32,000 unsold portfolio companies worth $3.8 trillion and puts buyout holding periods at exit around seven years, up from five to six years in 2010-2021. McKinsey's Global Private Markets Report 2026 finds that multiple expansion and cheap leverage, which drove 59 percent of PE returns between 2010 and 2022, have faded, leaving operational value creation as likely the primary source of returns. Sponsors holding companies longer may welcome operating levers that do not depend on new capital.
Who in the chapter can open several doors
Think of each member as a relationship with companies behind it. This one-to-many map shows where to start.
| Member | Companies behind the relationship | How to raise it | Watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|
| PE deal partner or principal | Current portfolio, especially long holds | As an item for the next portfolio review | Coordinate with any live exit process |
| Operating partner | Every company in the operating group's remit | As a screen across the portfolio | Each company decides for itself |
| Senior, ABL or mezzanine lender | Borrower book | As an option for borrowers who do not need more debt | Credit agreements can limit licensing of company assets |
| Investment banker | Sell-side pipeline and paused processes | For owners not ready to sell | Registered people must clear outside activities first |
| M&A or corporate attorney | Owner clients | As a contract question the owner should answer | Professional conduct rules on referral payments |
| Accountant or transaction advisory partner | Tax and advisory clients | Only where the firm does no attest work | AICPA and state board fee rules |
| Corporate development executive | Acquired businesses and their archives | As an option for records left from acquisitions | Employer policy on outside compensation |
Accountants and diligence teams will find the fee rules covered in the playbook for quality of earnings providers. Lenders who want to understand the consent point can read whether a company needs lender consent to license its data. Business brokers who attend chapter events have their own business broker playbook.
Which companies to bring up
The baseline is the same whoever makes the introduction: a US company with 50+ full-time employees at peak (contractors excluded), several years of documented operations, the right to license its records and an owner, CEO, CFO or authorized representative who can sponsor the deal. Within ACG networks, these profiles tend to stand out:
- Long-held portfolio companies with a decade of CRM, ERP and support history.
- Buy-and-build platforms where each add-on arrived with its own email, CRM and file archives.
- Founder-owned companies that have met bankers but are not ready to sell.
- Companies that changed status: acquired or wound-down businesses can still qualify if the records exist and someone controls them.
Run the chapter-table test before you offer an introduction:
- You can name the person who would sign.
- Peak headcount reached 50+ full-time employees, contractors excluded.
- The company still has its old systems, or exports of them, covering several years.
- The records describe its own work, not mainly clients' data or consumers' personal information.
- Your introduction would be warm: you know the decision maker or someone who does.

When to raise it on the ACG calendar
| Moment | The opening | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly breakfast or luncheon | A side conversation after a value creation or AI panel | Offer a follow-up call, not a pitch at the table |
| InterGrowth or a regional conference | Booked one-on-ones with sponsors and lenders | Ask which portfolio companies have the longest system history |
| Chapter awards dinner | Winning sponsors describe what they built | Ask what happened to the add-ons' old systems |
| Sponsor portfolio review season | Value creation plans are being refreshed | Suggest a screen across the portfolio |
| After a broken or paused process | Banker and owner reassess options | Position licensing as an option that does not need a sale |
| Year-end budgeting | CFOs set next year's plan | Mention a one-time license as a possible non-dilutive item |
How the introduction works
- You check fit with your contact and get the decision maker's agreement to talk.
- You register as a partner and send the company your referral link to sourcex.si/apply, or submit it through the referral form.
- SourceX qualifies the company directly on size, history, data breadth and rights.
- The company builds a data inventory of its systems and the years each one covers.
- Price and terms are agreed with the company first: one all-in price, with SourceX's fee included and no separate charges.
- AI labs and data buyers review; once a company is deal-ready, buyers typically respond within about two weeks.
- The license is signed, the data is delivered under redaction rules agreed before any work began, the company is paid, and then your reward is paid.
At no step do you export, upload or describe the company's records.
What to say over coffee
Keep chapter etiquette in mind: do not pitch the room, do not use a chapter directory or attendee list to contact owners, and never imply that ACG endorses SourceX.
Rules for bankers and other regulated members
Registered representatives should talk to their firm's compliance team before registering. FINRA reported that the SEC approved new Rule 3290 (Outside Activities) on September 15, 2026, replacing Rules 3270 and 3280; FINRA will announce the effective date in a Regulatory Notice, and until then Rules 3270 and 3280 apply. Commercial bankers should check their institution's policy on referral compensation, and attorneys and CPAs should check their own professional rules before accepting anything.
This is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Confirm with your own counsel, tax adviser or professional body before acting.
How rewards work across several introductions
Partners earn 25% of the eligible platform fees SourceX actually collects from the referred company's licensing deals, capped at $100,000 per referred company. Rewards become payable only after the buyer pays and SourceX receives its fee; an introduction, meeting or signed agreement alone does not trigger payment, and no reward is guaranteed.
Because the cap applies per referred company, a sponsor who introduces three portfolio companies has three separate opportunities, each qualified and closed, or not, on its own merits. The reward is a share of SourceX's fee and never reduces what the company receives.
ACG rooms overlap, so two members may know the same owner. Credit goes to the first valid referrer whose introduction leads to a verified company application within the attribution window. Agree among yourselves who makes the introduction before anyone sends a link.
When to pass
- You only know the company from a teaser or CIM under NDA; that information is not yours to use.
- The owner has signed an LOI and the buyer has not been told.
- The business is consumer-facing and its records are mainly personal data.
- The company's records belong to its clients, as at many agencies and outsourcers.
- The company never reached 50+ full-time employees at peak.
- Nobody at the company can export the data.
If you chair a forum or sit on a board, AI and company data as a CEO peer group meeting topic gives a ready discussion format.
Next step
Before your next chapter event, write down three relationships, one sponsor, one lender and one banker, and the companies behind each. Then register as a partner so your referral link is ready, or point an owner to apply directly at sourcex.si/apply.
- Step 1Share your linkSend your personal link to a company you know.
- Step 2Company appliesThe company applies itself at /apply.
- Step 3Buyer selects and paysThe buyer selects and pays for the data and SourceX receives its fee.
- Step 4You get your rewardYour share of SourceX fees becomes payable.
Common questions
Is it appropriate to raise data licensing at an ACG chapter event?
Yes, as a side conversation rather than a pitch. ACG events exist for exchanging ideas about middle-market companies, and licensing records competes with no one's mandate. Keep it to people you know, offer a follow-up call instead of a presentation, never use a chapter directory or attendee list for outreach, and disclose that you may earn a referral reward.
Can a sponsor introduce several portfolio companies?
Yes. Each portfolio company is introduced, qualified and priced on its own, and each decides for itself whether to license. The reward cap of $100,000 applies per referred company, so separate companies are separate opportunities. The sponsor should make sure each company's CEO or another authorized sponsor agrees to the introduction before its name is shared.
What happens if two ACG members know the same company?
Credit goes to the first valid referrer whose introduction leads to a verified company application within the attribution window. Because chapter networks overlap, agree between yourselves who will make the introduction before either of you sends a referral link, so the owner hears about SourceX once, from one person, with one disclosure.
Does a lender have to approve a borrower's data license?
Sometimes. Some credit agreements restrict licensing or transferring company assets, including intellectual property, without lender consent, and lenders may also look at how one-time income is treated in covenant calculations. The company and its counsel should read the agreement before signing a license. A lender who introduces a borrower should keep that introduction separate from credit decisions.
Can I refer a company I only know from a CIM or teaser?
No. Information in a confidential information memorandum or teaser is usually covered by a non-disclosure agreement, and it does not give you a relationship with the decision maker. SourceX introductions should come from people who can reach the owner, CEO, CFO or authorized representative directly and who have that person's agreement to make the introduction.
