Are first article inspection and PPAP records useful AI training data?
They can be. A first article inspection (FAI) report compares the first part off a new or changed process against the drawing, characteristic by characteristic, and ends in an accept or reject disposition. PPAP packages do the same job for automotive-style customers, with more supporting documents. Each file pairs measured values with a judgment, which is the structure quality-focused AI agents are built to learn.
The catch for sponsors of industrial businesses is ownership. Most job shops make parts to a customer's print, so the drawing, and sometimes the report that quotes it, belongs to the customer. Rights review comes before enthusiasm.
What is in an FAI or PPAP file?
| Record | What it holds | What a buyer can learn from it |
|---|---|---|
| Ballooned drawing | Each dimension or note numbered for inspection | Mapping from requirement to characteristic |
| Characteristic accountability sheet | Nominal, tolerance, measured result, pass or fail per characteristic | Structured measurement-to-decision pairs |
| Measurement method notes | Gauge, CMM program or fixture used | Which method fits which feature |
| Material and process certifications | Mill certs, heat-treat or plating records | Supply-chain evidence that supports a disposition |
| Nonconformance and disposition | Use-as-is, rework, scrap or customer deviation request | Judgment calls and who approved them |
| Customer approval or rejection | Sign-off, comments, requested resubmission | The outcome label, and what changed on the second try |
The resubmission loop is the richest part. A file showing a rejected first attempt, the correction and the later approval teaches more than a clean pass.
Which industrial businesses keep deep inspection history?
Machine shops, fabricators, injection molders, castings and forgings suppliers, electronics assemblers and contract manufacturers with quality management systems tend to hold years of reports. For the program baseline, companies need 50+ full-time employees at peak (contractors excluded), several years of documented operations, rights to license and an authorized sponsor. The who qualifies page has the full list.
Apply the O-W-N-S screen to each plant in a roll-up:
- Output archive: are reports stored as files or in a quality management system, searchable by part number and revision?
- Whose drawings: what share of reports concern the company's own designs, standard products or process data, versus customer prints?
- No gaps: do supplier and customer corrective-action records connect to the reports?
- Sponsor access: can you reach the owner, CEO, CFO or authorized representative at the operating company?
The second question decides scope. A company that makes its own products, or whose customers allow reuse, has far more licensable material than a pure build-to-print shop.
What are the rights traps with customer drawings?
- Print ownership. Drawings, specifications and model files supplied by a customer are usually the customer's, and supply agreements often restrict copying or disclosure.
- Export-controlled data. Some parts data may be subject to export-control rules. The company should check with its compliance lead before any inclusion; this page does not give legal advice.
- Confidentiality clauses. Quality agreements frequently carry non-disclosure terms that cover inspection results too.
- Customer-specific part numbers. Even redacted reports can reveal a customer's program. Redaction rules are agreed with the company before work begins.
Where customer content dominates, the realistic outcome may be a narrow license limited to process, method and measurement-technique records, or no license at all. Saying so early protects the relationship.
When should an operating partner raise it?
| Moment | Why it works | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Quality system recertification | Records are being gathered anyway | Where do FAI files live and how far back do they go? |
| New quality software rollout | Old reports must be migrated or retired | Will the old archive remain exportable? |
| Add-on acquisition of a machine shop | Inherited file shares are unmapped | Who knows what the acquired quality records cover? |
| Customer audit season | Teams are digging out historical reports | Which reports can we license without touching customer prints? |
| Pre-sale diligence | Buyers ask about owned intangible assets | Is any archive a separate asset from the customer relationships? |
How does the introduction work?
- You register and share your referral link, or submit the company via the referral form.
- SourceX qualifies size, history, data breadth and rights with the sponsor.
- The company builds an inventory of its quality systems and archives, using the data inventory builder if helpful, and flags which files rest on customer prints.
- Price and terms are agreed, with scope reflecting the rights findings.
- AI labs and data buyers review the opportunity.
- After signature, data is prepared under the agreed redaction rules and delivered, and the company is paid. Your reward follows SourceX's receipt of payment.
You never receive drawings, reports or part data. Partners make introductions and give basic fit information only.
What to say to a plant president
The "excluding customer-owned content" phrase matters. It tells the executive you have thought about the real constraint.
How do FAI records fit with related quality data?
Improvement events record planned change, as in kaizen and A3 records. Complaints record what customers report after shipment, see complaint handling records. Inspection files sit in between: the judgment at the moment of release. For the wider reason these decision-with-outcome records are scarce, read the guide on exception handling records.
How rewards work for a sponsor
Partners earn 25% of the eligible platform fees SourceX actually collects from the referred company's licensing deals, capped at $100,000 per referred company. The reward is paid only after the buyer pays and SourceX receives its fee; an introduction, meeting or signed agreement alone does not trigger payment, and no reward is guaranteed. The company's proceeds are unaffected, since the reward is funded from SourceX's fee. Ask your own compliance lead whether a referral fee is permitted for your role, and see the program terms.
When to skip FAI records
- The company is a pure build-to-print shop with no reuse rights.
- Reports are held only in a customer's supplier portal.
- Data is controlled under export rules the company cannot clear.
- Files were deleted when a quality system was replaced.
- The owner will not consider an exclusive license for an agreed term.
Next step
Choose one industrial portfolio company and ask the plant manager one question: which share of inspection reports concern our own parts? If the answer is substantial, register as a partner and introduce the sponsor, or send the CEO to sourcex.si/apply with your referral link.
