When does a data licensing deal become binding for the company?
A data licensing deal binds the company only when its authorized signatory signs a license agreement with the price and terms it accepted. Applying, qualification, the data inventory and buyer review are all non-binding, so the company can pause or walk away at any of those stages, and no records are delivered before signing.
The plain answer: the signature is the line
A data licensing deal becomes binding when the company's authorized sponsor signs the license agreement containing the price and terms the company accepted. Everything before that, from the first conversation through the data inventory to buyer review, is exploratory. The company can pause, rethink or walk away at any of those stages.
That is how SourceX runs the process. Companies keep ownership, the data is licensed rather than sold, and nothing is binding until the company agrees price and terms and signs. Records are delivered only after an executed agreement and the company's authorization.
What commits the company at each stage?
Read the table from top to bottom: the company has full freedom until the signing row.
| Stage | What happens | Binding on the company? | Can it still walk away? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Introduction or application | A partner introduces the company, or it applies at sourcex.si/apply | No | Yes |
| Qualification | SourceX checks size, operating history, systems, rights and an authorized sponsor | No | Yes |
| Data inventory | The company lists systems, years and record types without sending any records | No | Yes |
| Price and terms | The company agrees with SourceX the all-in price and terms it would accept | No license is signed yet | Yes |
| Buyer review | AI labs and data buyers assess the opportunity | No | Yes |
| Signing | The authorized sponsor signs the license agreement | Yes, on its written terms | Only as the agreement allows |
| Delivery and payment | The agreed dataset is delivered under the agreed redaction rules; the company is paid | Obligations under the signed agreement | Only as the agreement allows |
One caution applies at every stage: read anything before you sign it. If the company signs a document along the way, such as a confidentiality agreement, that document can carry obligations of its own even though it does not commit the company to license anything.

Why do owners hesitate, and what is actually true?
Most hesitation comes from assuming an early step is a commitment. Each common worry has a factual answer.
| Worry | What is true |
|---|---|
| Applying commits us to a deal | Applying starts qualification; it creates no obligation to license |
| The inventory hands over our data | The inventory describes systems and record types; no records move |
| Once a buyer is interested we have to accept | The company signs only if the price and terms work for it |
| Exclusivity starts the day we apply | Exclusivity is a term of the signed deal, typically for AI training for an agreed term |
| We give up ownership | The data is licensed, not sold; the company keeps ownership |
| There will be separate fees along the way | The company gets one all-in price with SourceX's fee included and no separate charges |
What changes once the agreement is signed?
Signing turns the agreed terms into obligations for both sides.
- Exclusivity begins for the field and term written into the agreement; deals are typically exclusive for AI training.
- Delivery obligations start. The company prepares the agreed dataset under the de-identification and redaction rules it settled before any work began.
- Warranties and indemnities take effect. Promises about rights and the accuracy of the dataset description now carry weight; indemnification in AI training data licenses explains how.
- Payment follows. The company receives a one-time payment, typically within about 60 days of invoicing once the buyer selects the data.
Who signs for the company?
The authorized sponsor: the owner, CEO, CFO or another authorized representative. SourceX looks for that person during qualification, because no deal can close without them. Some companies also need internal sign-off before the sponsor signs, for example from a board or major shareholders; does licensing company data need board or shareholder approval covers when that comes up.
The line partners can use with a hesitant owner
Owners often hold back because they think applying is a commitment. A precise answer moves the conversation without overselling.
The data inventory builder lets an owner list systems and record types before any call, which often settles the worry about what the company would be handing over.
The same line marks when a partner reward can arise. Partners earn 25% of the eligible platform fees SourceX actually collects from the referred company's licensing deals, capped at $100,000 per referred company, and the reward becomes payable only after the buyer pays and SourceX receives its fee. An application, a meeting or a signed agreement alone does not trigger payment, and no reward is guaranteed.
Limits and open questions
- Reaching buyer review is not a deal. A company can complete every non-binding step and still see no buyer select its data; what if no AI buyer selects your company's data explains the options.
- Buyer timing varies. Once a company is deal-ready, buyers typically respond within about two weeks, which describes a pattern rather than a promise.
- Wording decides the effect of any document. Whether a particular page binds the company depends on what it says and which law governs it. The company's own counsel, not a partner or a web page, should confirm when the company is bound.

Next step
Register as a partner to introduce an owner who wants to explore without commitment, or share your referral link so the company can apply at sourcex.si/apply with your credit preserved. The full sequence is on how it works.
- Step 1Share your linkSend your personal link to a company you know.
- Step 2Company appliesThe company applies itself at /apply.
- Step 3Buyer selects and paysThe buyer selects and pays for the data and SourceX receives its fee.
- Step 4You get your rewardYour share of SourceX fees becomes payable.
Common questions
Can a company withdraw after completing the data inventory?
Yes. The inventory describes systems, years and record types so SourceX and the company can scope a possible deal. Finishing it creates no obligation to license anything. The company can stop there, come back later or continue to price and terms, and nothing binds it until it signs an agreement it has accepted.
Is applying through a partner's referral link a commitment?
No. A referral link sends the company to the SourceX application with the partner's referral code attached, so the partner receives credit if a deal follows. The application starts qualification; it is not a contract to license data. The company decides at each later stage whether to continue.
When does exclusivity begin in a data licensing deal?
Only when the license agreement is signed. Deals are typically exclusive for AI training for an agreed term, and that exclusivity is one of the terms the company accepts at signing. Applying, qualifying or completing an inventory does not create an exclusive commitment to any buyer.
What if a buyer asks for different terms during review?
The company can accept, counter or decline. Buyer review binds neither side, and any change to scope, price or exclusivity has to be agreed before signing. Owners should treat a buyer's request as a negotiation point, discuss it with SourceX and their counsel, and sign only when the final agreement matches what they accepted.
Does the referral partner earn anything if the company walks away before signing?
No. Rewards become payable only after a buyer pays and SourceX receives its fee, so a company that stops before signing, or a deal that is never paid, produces no reward. When a reward is paid, it is a share of SourceX's fee and is never deducted from what the company receives.
