How manufacturers' reps can earn side income by introducing principals to SourceX

A manufacturers' rep can earn side income by introducing a principal with 50+ full-time employees at peak to SourceX; a reward is paid only after the principal licenses its data, the buyer pays and SourceX collects its fee. The rep shares basic fit information only, and should check the rep agreement first.

Can a manufacturers' rep earn side income from introductions?

A rep can introduce a principal to SourceX and, if the principal licenses its data and the deal closes and is paid, earn a share of SourceX's fee. The rep never touches the principal's records or the customers' information. The introduction is the whole job, and only a rep whose agency agreement and principals allow it should make one.

Reps are well placed because the relationship is already there. You sit in the principal's quarterly review, know the owner by first name and see how orders, quotes, backorders and returns actually move. Most of what a principal holds that AI buyers care about is the record of that work, not the product.

The catch is that a rep agency is a middleman. Your principals' customer lists, pricing and shipment data are theirs, and your rep agreement may say something about side arrangements. The sections below cover both.

Which of your principals are worth a second look?

Look for principals, not products. A principal that fits looks like this:

SignalWhat to look forWhy AI buyers care
Size50+ full-time employees at peak (contractors excluded)Enough people produce enough connected records
HistorySeveral years of documented operations, including archived ERP or quoting systemsLonger histories show how decisions and exceptions evolved
SystemsERP, CRM, quoting, engineering change tools, email, shared drives, support or RMA ticketsLinked systems show complete order-to-resolution workflows
OutcomesQuotes won or lost, ECNs approved or rejected, returns resolvedOutcomes make records usable for training and evaluation
RightsThe principal created the records and nobody else's data dominates themBuyers need clean rights before anything is delivered
SponsorAn owner, CEO, CFO or authorized representative you can reachSomeone must be able to agree terms and sign

Principals that are US-based, English-language and run by an owner or executive willing to explore an exclusive AI-training license for an agreed term are the best candidates. Contract manufacturers and print or building-products suppliers often screen well; the briefs on contract manufacturer acquisitions, lumber yard acquisitions and commercial printing acquisitions show how records and rights differ by segment.

The 3-lane rule for what a rep may bring up

Sort everything you know about a principal into three lanes before you say anything.

  • Lane 1, public and yours to mention: the principal's headcount range, years in business, industry, and the fact that it is a US company. This is basic fit information.
  • Lane 2, the principal's own and not yours to describe: quote histories, price books, engineering drawings, customer names, order volumes, margins.
  • Lane 3, your own agency's records: your CRM notes, commission statements, call reports. These are your business's records, and your agreements with principals and customers may limit them. They are not part of the introduction either.

Only Lane 1 goes into a referral form. If you catch yourself wanting to explain what a principal's data contains, stop and let the owner do that directly with SourceX.

What does your rep agreement say about side arrangements?

Check the agreement before you raise anything. Rep agreements commonly cover territory, commission rates, exclusivity, termination, and sometimes conflicts of interest or confidentiality about the principal's business. Whether yours treats a referral arrangement with a third party as a conflict is a contract question, not something this page can answer.

Walk through these questions with your own counsel or by reading the document:

  • Does the agreement forbid outside compensation tied to the principal's business, or require disclosure of it?
  • Does a confidentiality clause cover the principal's company information, including its identity as a prospect for something?
  • Is there an exclusivity or non-compete clause that a side arrangement might touch?
  • Do you represent several principals, and could the introduction create a conflict between them?
  • Would you be comfortable telling the principal about the reward up front?

If any answer is unclear, ask the principal. A short, plain disclosure ("I would earn a share of SourceX's fee if you license through them; it does not come out of your price") protects the relationship better than silence.

When to raise it in the rep calendar

How the introduction works without moving any data

  1. You register as a partner and get a referral link, or you submit basic fit information through the referral form.
  2. The principal's owner applies, or agrees to be contacted, and SourceX qualifies size, history, data breadth and rights.
  3. The principal completes a data inventory of its systems and what can be exported.
  4. SourceX and the principal agree one all-in price and terms; nothing is binding until the principal signs.
  5. Buyers review; once a company is deal-ready, buyers typically respond within about two weeks.
  6. The deal closes, data is delivered under redaction rules agreed in advance, and the principal is paid.
  7. Your reward is paid after SourceX receives its fee.

Credit goes to the first valid referrer whose introduction leads to a verified company application within the attribution window. If you are not sure whether another introducer already reached the same company, use the referral link and let the system record it.

What to say to a principal

Draft your own version with the introduction email builder. Keep it under five sentences and leave out any dollar figure.

How rewards work for a rep

Partners earn 25% of the eligible platform fees SourceX actually collects from the referred company's licensing deals, capped at $100,000 cumulative per referred company. The reward is payable only after the buyer pays and SourceX receives its fee; a lead, meeting or signed agreement alone does not trigger payment, and no reward is guaranteed. The reward is a share of SourceX's fee and is never deducted from what the principal receives. Full terms are on the rewards page and in the program terms.

When not to bother

  • The principal has fewer than 50 full-time employees at peak, or has mostly contractors.
  • Its records are dominated by its customers' or distributors' data with no consent to license.
  • It has already licensed the same data for AI training.
  • Nobody there can run exports or owns the archive.
  • The owner will not consider an exclusive license for an agreed term.
  • You cannot reach an authorized sponsor, or your rep agreement forbids the arrangement.

For a quick preliminary screen without contact details, use the company fit checker. Advisors who sell businesses can read the M&A advisor referral page for the sale-process angle.

Common questions

Do I need my principal's permission before I mention SourceX?

Check your rep agreement first, then tell the owner plainly what you are doing and that you may earn a share of SourceX's fee. You can share basic fit information such as headcount and years in business, but never the principal's customers, pricing or records. If the agreement is silent or unclear, ask your own counsel.

Does the principal's customer data count as the principal's data?

Not automatically. Customer names, shipment data and end-user information may belong partly or wholly to customers or be restricted by contract. SourceX reviews rights with the principal before anything goes to a buyer. Records the principal created about its own operations, such as internal quotes and engineering change history, are the more natural starting point.

Can I introduce several principals?

Yes, if each one passes the screen and your agreements allow it. Each principal is assessed on its own merits and attribution is tracked per company. Be careful about conflicts if two principals compete in the same territory or product line, and disclose the arrangement to each.

What does the rep actually do after the introduction?

Very little. The principal's sponsor works with SourceX on qualification, a data inventory, price and terms. You may be asked for context but you do not export, upload or describe confidential records. Your reward is paid after the buyer pays and SourceX receives its fee, not before.

Is the side income reliable?

No. Many introductions may not close, and no reward is guaranteed. A principal may fail the qualification baseline, decline an exclusive license, or lack clean rights. Treat this as an occasional upside from relationships you already have, not as a replacement for commission income.
