Your First Month Referral Plan as a Fractional CTO

Fractional CTOs can effectively integrate data licensing referrals into their practice by dedicating the first month to identifying and qualifying client companies against SourceX's baseline, securing an authorized sponsor, and making the initial introduction. This structured approach helps maximize referral potential without disrupting ongoing client work.

As a fractional CTO, you're uniquely positioned to identify valuable data assets within the companies you advise. SourceX provides a pathway to unlock that value through data licensing. This guide outlines a practical first-month plan to integrate the SourceX referral program into your practice.

Phase 1: Client Screening and Qualification

Your first step is to review your current client portfolio and identify potential candidates. Focus on companies that align with the SourceX baseline criteria:

  • US-based companies.
  • 50+ full-time employees at peak (excluding contractors).
  • Years of operating records indicating a history of data generation.
  • Rights to license their data. This is crucial – ensure they own or have explicit rights to commercialize the data.
  • An authorized sponsor within the company who can champion the initiative.

Practical Steps:

  • Week 1-2: Portfolio Review & Initial Identification
    • Review your client roster. Which companies are generating significant data? Which might have valuable, underutilized datasets?
    • Create a preliminary list of 3-5 potential companies.
    • For each, quickly assess against the US location and employee count criteria. (F06)
  • Week 2-3: Deeper Dive & Sponsor Confirmation
    • For the shortlisted companies, discreetly verify the `rights to license the data` and `years of operating records`. This might involve informal conversations with relevant stakeholders or a review of their data governance policies.
    • Crucially, identify who within the company would be the `authorized sponsor` for such an initiative. This person needs the authority and understanding to pursue data licensing. Without a clear sponsor, the referral is unlikely to move forward. (F06)

Phase 2: Introduction and Tracking

Once you have a qualified company and a confirmed sponsor, the next step is the introduction to SourceX. Remember, `credit goes to the first valid referrer whose introduction leads to a verified company application`. (F04)

Practical Steps:

  • Week 3-4: Prepare and Introduce
    • Educate your sponsor: Briefly explain what SourceX is – `the enterprise data transaction layer for AI, managing data licensing from sourcing and rights review to delivery and payment`. (F09) Clarify that `SourceX manages data licensing transactions and does not train AI models`. (F10)
    • Make the introduction: Use the SourceX referral portal to submit the introduction. Ensure all required information is accurate. This initiates the tracking of your referral.
    • Follow-up (gently): After the introduction, you might follow up with your sponsor to confirm they've connected with SourceX or answer any initial questions they might have.

Managing Expectations and Rewards

It's important to understand the reward structure. Partners `earn 25% of the eligible platform fees SourceX actually collects from the referred company's licensing deals`, `capped at $100,000 cumulative per referred company`. (F01, F02) `Rewards become payable only after the buyer pays and SourceX receives its fee`. (F03) The `partner reward is a share of SourceX's fee and is never deducted from what the company receives`. (F07)

This first month is about laying a solid foundation. By systematically identifying and introducing qualified companies with authorized sponsors, you maximize your potential for successful referrals.

First Month Checklist:

  • Understand SourceX's core function: data licensing for AI. (F09)
  • Review current client list for US companies. (F06)
  • Identify clients with 50+ full-time employees at peak. (F06)
