# Venture platform benefit comparison per outcome | SourceX

Compare every platform benefit in the same unit: team hours and founder hours per founder who reached a usable outcome, counted over the same 90 days, with every income line set to zero. Define the outcome before you count. For a data licensing referral it is a CEO who made an informed decision, an application or a reasoned no, not a link sent. Then put reach and outside dependencies beside the cost. A referral track that costs more per outcome than any benefit founders rate useful should stop.

The scarce input is platform attention, not money. A benefit that looks free can eat a week of a platform lead's quarter, and one that looks expensive can be the one founders ask for every month. Compensation is uncertain, late and owed to whoever registered as the partner, so it goes in its own ledger, where it cannot tilt the comparison.

## What each benefit gives a founder, and what counts as done

Platform menus are broad. Andreessen Horowitz, which says it pioneered the platform model, describes a team of operators spanning marketing, talent, legal and policy; its growth-fund announcement says its go-to-market team connects portfolio companies with new customers and its talent team runs an executive and technical talent network. Those benefits produce different kinds of results, so a count of "founders served" compares nothing. Fix one usable outcome per benefit first: something the founder would confirm happened.

| Benefit | What the founder gets | Usable outcome to count | Never count |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perks catalog | Vendor credits and discounts | A perk the founder says replaced a purchase they had planned | Catalog views or sign-ups |
| Customer introductions | A warm path to a buyer | A qualified first meeting the founder confirms | Introductions sent |
| Talent introductions | Candidates for a hard role | A candidate who reached a final interview | Profiles shared |
| Data licensing referral | A route to learn whether the company's own records could be licensed for AI training and evaluation | The CEO's informed decision: a verified application or a reasoned no | Links shared, meetings booked |

Capacity comes in three kinds of hours: the platform team's, the relationship owner's (the partner, LP or founder who asks a CEO on the platform's behalf) and the founder's, which platform reports most often leave out. A benefit can be cheap on one line and expensive on another.

Perks look costless, but vendors want platforms as a channel: in PartnerStack and Wynter's survey of 100 senior leaders at B2B SaaS companies, 69% said they plan to increase investment in partnerships in the coming year. In effect, a perk is a vendor's partner program that the platform endorses to its founders. Count its upkeep hours and keep any revenue share in the separate ledger, as you would a referral reward.

## The comparable-cost benefit evaluation

Five rules make the benefits comparable. Apply all five or the table flatters whichever benefit you like best.

1. **One denominator.** Usable outcomes as defined above, never founders offered the benefit.
2. **One window.** Ninety days from the first offer: long enough for a meeting or a decision to apply, and the length of the program's attribution window, within which a company must submit a verified application for an introduction to be credited.
3. **All the hours.** Platform, relationship-owner and founder time, from a time log kept during the quarter, not estimated afterward.
4. **Income at zero for every benefit.** Referral rewards and vendor revenue shares alike go in a separate ledger.
5. **Name the outside party.** Record who else must act before the outcome counts: a prospect, a candidate, a vendor or SourceX's review.

Illustrative. A 60-company portfolio over one 90-day window; generic benefits and invented figures.

| Benefit | Founders who can use it | Uses | Team hours | Founder hours | Usable outcomes | Team hours per outcome | Founder hours per outcome | Who else must act |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Perks catalog | 60 | 40 redemptions | 12 | 20 | 22 | 0.5 | 0.9 | The vendor |
| Customer introductions | 45 | 30 introductions | 70 | 60 | 18 | 3.9 | 3.3 | The prospect |
| Talent introductions | 60 | 25 searches | 90 | 75 | 10 | 9.0 | 7.5 | The candidate |
| Data licensing referral | 14 | 8 CEO conversations | 41 | 14 | 6 | 6.8 | 2.3 | SourceX's review |

Read across the rows, not down. The referral track's six decisions were four applications and two reasoned no's, at 6.8 team hours each, between customer introductions at 3.9 and talent introductions at 9.0. It is light for founders at 2.3 hours, because SourceX's first step is a few questions with no files: the company lists its systems, its years of history and what can be exported, and shares no records.

Its weakness is reach. Only 14 of the 60 companies pass the published fit facts on what the fund already knows: 50 or more full-time employees at peak with contractors excluded, years of the company's own records, the rights to license them, a CEO who wants the conversation and a covered location. Companies in the U.S., Canada and the EU qualify, as do companies in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, South Africa, Latin America, the UAE and Saudi Arabia when at least 70% of the data is in English.

An informed decision is also an early outcome, comparable to a qualified first meeting, not to a signed customer. Matched against a closed deal it looks worse than it is; matched against an introduction sent, better.

## Where the 41 hours go, stage by stage

| Stage | Who works | Units in 90 days | Hours per unit | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upkeep: check the terms version, refresh the founder disclosure note | Head of platform | 1 quarter | 4.0 | 4 |
| Desk screen on the four fit facts | Platform analyst | 60 companies | 0.2 | 12 |
| Relationship owner asks the CEO | Partner, LP or portfolio founder | 10 companies | 0.5 | 5 |
| First CEO conversation, metadata only | Platform lead | 8 companies | 1.5 | 12 |
| Founder follow-up questions | Platform lead | 6 companies | 1.0 | 6 |
| Application support | Platform lead | 4 companies | 0.5 | 2 |
| Total | Everyone above | One quarter | Varies | 41 |

The income line is $0. Set against other benefits, a reward on a company's first qualifying transaction is the greater of $50,000 plus 5% and 15% of Actual Supplier Payout, with no cap, with the USD 50,000 floor applied once per referred company; further qualifying transactions first agreed within 12 months pay 15%. It is paid separately by SourceX and never deducted from the company's payout. Payment needs Acquisition Partner acceptance, Acquisition Partner payment received by SourceX in cleared funds, payment of the company's compensation, SourceX finance approval and the partner's tax and payment details on file, and the deadline runs to 60 calendar days after handoff is complete or after the Acquisition Partner signs off, in a final written acceptance, on the complete, validated dataset, whichever is later. SourceX's process page adds an inventory assessment of initially up to 30 days after the Master signature, an acceptance review of up to 30 days and company payment due within 60 calendar days of a valid invoice after Closing, so a reward is unlikely to fall inside a 90-day window.

The founder's own benefit is uncertain too: SourceX usually pays a one-time fee fixed in the signed Dataset Deal Confirmation, and data that does not reach Closing earns no payment. It arrives after the window and cannot be forecast, so the evaluation measures the informed decision instead. How the money divides between the company, SourceX and a partner is laid out in [who benefits from a data licensing deal](/questions/who-benefits-from-data-licensing-deal), and wording for telling founders about any reward is in [discussing referral rewards transparently](/guides/how-to-discuss-referral-rewards-transparently-with-a-business-contact).

## Expand, hold or stop on day 90

Fix the bands before the quarter starts, from the benefits you already run, so the referral track cannot set its own bar.

| Reading on day 90 | Decision | What follows |
|---|---|---|
| Team hours per outcome at or below the median current benefit (3.9 in the worksheet), most CEOs rate the conversation useful and no relationship owner has complained | Expand | Screen the next group of portfolio and network companies; keep the time log |
| Between the median and the costliest benefit founders still rate useful (3.9 to 9.0) | Hold | Keep the current scope and take new CEO requests one at a time |
| Above the costliest useful benefit, fewer than three informed decisions, or any relationship owner asks to stop | Stop | Close open rows politely and keep each company's screening note and revisit trigger |

The Illustrative base case reads hold: 6.8 hours sits inside the band. To measure usefulness, ask each CEO two questions two weeks after the conversation: "Did you learn something about your records you did not know?" and "Would you have taken this meeting if a stranger had offered it?" A yes to the second is the strongest signal the benefit stands on its own.

If the track reaches expand, the next question is what it displaces, which the [founder-program tradeoff scorecard](/guides/the-opportunity-cost-of-another-founder-program) answers. For a fuller model of hours per qualified introduction, see [whether data referral work is worth a platform team's time](/guides/is-data-referral-work-worth-a-platform-team-s-time).

## The quarter that says stop (Illustrative)

Same fund, a different portfolio mix: only 3 of the 60 companies pass the fit facts, two CEOs take a conversation and one decides within the window. The time log shows 4 hours of upkeep, 12 of screening, 1.5 for relationship-owner asks, 3 for conversations and 1 for follow-up questions: 21.5 hours for one informed decision, against 9.0 for talent introductions, the costliest benefit founders rate useful.

Two stop conditions trip at once: cost above the band and fewer than three decisions. Two founder hours do not rescue it, because screening is a fixed cost however few companies pass. The team stops the track, writes a revisit trigger such as "ten companies pass all four fit facts", and still helps any CEO who raises the subject unprompted, one introduction at a time.

## Where this comparison misleads

- **Effort is not value.** A finalist for a hard executive role and a software credit are not worth the same, and the table prices effort only. Read it next to founder ratings.
- **Small numbers.** Six decisions is a handful. Treat gaps of less than two hours per outcome as ties.
- **Self-descriptions and vendor surveys.** Andreessen Horowitz's account of its platform is the firm's own. PartnerStack sells partnership software, and its respondents run B2B SaaS companies, not venture platforms.
- **Reach moves with the program.** SourceX applies the criteria of each program, and a company that does not fit one may fit another later. Date the reach column.
- **Demand is decided in review.** SourceX checks relevance to its current data needs during review. A reasoned no still counts as an outcome, but a run of them will show up in founder ratings, and it should.

**Method note.** The five rules, outcome definitions and bands are this page's own framework, applied to Illustrative figures. Program facts come from the SourceX terms (Version 2026-10-22.2, since replaced by version 2026-11-04), the who-qualifies page and SourceX's process page, and platform context from Andreessen Horowitz's site and PartnerStack's 2026 report, all checked on 26 October 2026. Not measured, because none is published: founder outcomes in any real fund, SourceX acceptance rates or payouts. The fund-side overview of the program is on the page for [venture platform teams](/for/venture-platform-teams), and more operating guides sit in the [guides library](/guides).

## Next step

> **Refer a company. No cap on rewards.** Default reward on a company's first qualifying transaction: the greater of $50,000 plus 5% and 15% of Actual Supplier Payout, with no cap; further qualifying transactions first agreed within 12 months of the first Closing pay 15%. Eligibility and payment conditions apply, including the USD 100,000 Minimum Transaction, and a signed Schedule A or addendum can differ. A lead, meeting or signature alone does not trigger payment.

If the referral track lands in the hold or expand band with income at zero, [register for a partner link](/register), screen the first companies against [who qualifies](/who-qualifies) and read the [program terms](/terms) before the first founder hears about it.

Comparing platform benefits is a decision about founders' time and your team's hours; evaluating SourceX as a company to invest in is a separate decision with its own materials, which the [SourceX investor overview](https://sourcex.si/investors) supplies on request.
