# Referral partnership for construction technology consultants

Construction technology consultants can refer mid-sized contractors to SourceX when a client has 50+ full-time employees at peak and years of project records across estimating, scheduling, field and accounting systems. You make the introduction; SourceX and the contractor handle inventory, rights review, contracting and delivery. A reward becomes payable after SourceX has paid the referred company under its signed agreement and the payout conditions in the program terms are met, including finance approval and your tax and payment details.

## Why construction technology consultants are well placed

You already sit in the room where a contractor decides which systems stay and which go. During a platform selection, an estimating-tool rollout or a project-management migration, you see how many years of work sit in each tool and who controls the exports. That visibility is the whole reason this program fits your practice.

Mid-sized contractors rarely think of their records as an asset. They think of them as the thing that has to be moved before the old software contract ends. A short, well-timed conversation can change that framing without adding to your project scope.

AI developers are shifting from models that answer questions toward agents that carry out multi-step work. Training and evaluating those agents needs records of real work: bids and how they were priced, change orders and how they were resolved, schedule updates and the reasons behind them. SourceX manages data licensing between companies that hold such records and AI labs and data buyers. Companies keep ownership; data is licensed, not sold.

## Which contractors in your book fit

Look for signals you already collect during discovery calls.

| Signal | What to look for | Why buyers care |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 50+ full-time employees at peak, contractors excluded | Enough people produce enough connected records |
| History | Several years of documented operations, including retired systems | Long histories show how bids, schedules and decisions evolved |
| Estimating and bidding | Bid histories with won and lost outcomes | Outcomes make records usable for training and evaluation |
| Project management | RFIs, submittals, change orders, daily logs with resolutions | Multi-step workflows with decisions and results |
| Back office | Accounting, payroll process, procurement and approvals | Structured approval chains and exceptions |
| Communication | Email and Slack or Teams threads tied to projects | Context around why decisions were made |

Specialty contractors, construction managers, engineering-heavy design-build firms and the back offices of larger trade businesses tend to screen well. Pure field crews with little documented process do not.

## The 4R screen applied to a contractor

Run four questions before you raise it with anyone.

- [ ] **Records:** do years of project, estimating and finance records exist across several systems, and can someone still export them?
- [ ] **Rights:** did the contractor create the material itself, and do owner, subcontractor and employee agreements leave room to license it?
- [ ] **Reach:** can you get to the owner, CEO, CFO or another authorized representative?
- [ ] **Readiness:** would that person consider a one-time payment for an exclusive AI-training license?

The [company fit checker](/tools/company-fit-checker) runs a preliminary, non-binding version of this screen with no contact details required. The full baseline sits on the [who qualifies](/who-qualifies) page.

## When to raise it in a construction technology engagement

| Moment | Why it works | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery workshop | Systems are being listed anyway | Which platforms hold the oldest project history? |
| Platform decommission plan | Old contracts are ending | Is a full export being kept before access is cut? |
| Acquisition of a smaller contractor | Two sets of archives meet | Who owns the acquired firm's records after migration? |
| Year-end review | Leadership is planning next year | Would a one-time license payment change the plan? |
| Post go-live retro | The new system is stable | What did we leave behind in the old tools? |

For a deeper look at the ERP side of a migration, see the [ERP consultants page](/for/erp-consultants). If your work leans toward process change, the [management consultants page](/for/management-consultants) covers a similar role from a different angle.

## How the introduction works

You make the introduction and nothing else.

1. Register as a partner and get your referral link, or submit the contractor through the referral form.
2. SourceX qualifies the company on size, history, data breadth and rights with its authorized sponsor.
3. The contractor completes a data inventory of its systems, years of history and what can be exported. The [data inventory builder](/tools/data-inventory-builder) helps list systems at metadata level.
4. SourceX and the contractor agree one net payout and terms. Nothing is binding until the company signs.
5. SourceX completes its final review; once a company is deal-ready, SourceX typically responds within about two weeks.
6. After an executed agreement and the company's authorization, data is delivered under agreed redaction rules, and the company is paid, within 60 calendar days after SourceX receives a valid invoice following Closing.

## What to say to the contractor's owner

> "Some contractors our size are licensing their historical operating records to SourceX for a one-time payment. You keep ownership, approve the scope and price, and nothing moves without a signed agreement. SourceX runs the process. Before we retire the old system, would a short fit check be useful?"

Keep it free of promises. Do not describe specific records or name project owners.

## How rewards work for a consultant

Partners earn 25% of the compensation SourceX actually pays the company you refer, capped at $100,000 cumulative per referred company. A reward becomes payable after SourceX has paid the referred company under its signed agreement and the payout conditions in the program terms are met, including finance approval and your tax and payment details. The reward is calculated on the actual supplier payout and is never deducted from what the contractor receives. Credit goes to the first valid referrer whose introduction leads to a verified company application within the attribution window.

Check your consulting agreement for referral-fee or conflict clauses, and read the [program terms](/terms) before you register.

## How contractors tend to respond

| Reaction | What is usually behind it | How to answer |
|---|---|---|
| "Our data is just job files." | They have not seen records as workflow history | Explain that bids, change orders and approvals with outcomes are the interesting part, and that scope is theirs to set |
| "Owners would never allow it." | Contract confidentiality worries | Say rights are reviewed first and the company decides what is in scope |
| "We are too busy." | Fear of an IT project | Point out that the sponsor approves; a named internal owner handles the inventory |
| "Is this a sale of our data?" | Ownership concern | Data is licensed, not sold, and the company keeps ownership |

Illustrative: a fictional 120-person specialty contractor is retiring a ten-year-old estimating database during a platform move. The consultant asks the CFO one question, whether a full export will be kept, and offers an introduction. Nothing about the records is shared with the consultant.

## When not to bother

- The contractor has fewer than the baseline headcount at peak.
- Most records belong to owners or clients who have not agreed to licensing.
- Archives were deleted or nobody can run an export.
- The data was already licensed for AI training.
- The owner will not consider an exclusive license.

## Next step

Pick one client with an aging system and run the screen. If it passes, [register as a partner](/register) and make the introduction, or have the contractor apply directly at [sourcex.si/apply](https://sourcex.si/apply) through your referral link.
