Accounting technology consultants can introduce US clients with 50+ full-time employees at peak and years of finance records, ideally before a ledger, close-tool or workflow migration retires old systems. A reward becomes payable after SourceX has paid the referred company under its signed agreement and the payout conditions in the program terms are met, including finance approval and your tax and payment details.

## What can an accounting technology consultant refer, and when?

An accounting technology consultant, whether inside a CPA firm's technology practice or independent, can introduce a client company that holds years of finance and operations records, and the best moment is a migration, when old systems are about to be archived or switched off. The consultant makes the introduction only; SourceX and the company handle inventory, terms and delivery, and no records pass through the consultant.

This page is for people who run cloud accounting rollouts, ERP-adjacent finance migrations, close-automation projects and application stack reviews for firms and their clients. It differs from the [ERP consultant page](/for/erp-consultants) by focusing on the accounting-firm technology team and its relationship with owners and controllers.

## Why are accounting technology teams well placed?

The work touches the places records live and the moments they are at risk.

- You inventory the client's applications during a stack review, which is the same kind of knowledge a data inventory draws on.
- You know which platforms retain history, which truncate it and which attachments get dropped during a conversion.
- You often hold the admin conversation about exports, user access and retention settings.
- You meet the owner, controller or CFO at the points where decisions on systems get made.

That visibility is the asset. It lets you identify a fit without ever viewing a confidential record.

## Which migrations and projects are the best triggers?

| Project | What happens to records | Fit question to ask | Timing note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud ledger conversion | Old ledger and attachments may be archived or lost | Will a complete export of the legacy system be kept? | Raise before cutover |
| Bookkeeping or CAS platform change | Prior-period documents and notes move or stay behind | Who holds the old documents afterward? | Raise at scoping |
| Close-management rollout | Checklists, approvals and notes begin in a new tool | Do earlier close records exist anywhere? | Raise at kickoff |
| Document or workflow tool change | Approval trails and attachments migrate partly | Which approval history gets carried over? | Raise before mapping |
| Acquisition integration | Two ledgers and two archives merge | Where does the acquired company's history go? | Raise in planning |
| Application rationalization | Tools are cancelled to cut cost | Was a final export taken before cancellation? | Raise before notice periods end |

The principle: a conversation held before the cutover can preserve options, while one held after often finds nothing left to inventory.

## The 4R screen for a technology engagement

- [ ] **Records:** does the client hold several years of its own operational and finance records across multiple systems, with someone able to export them?
- [ ] **Rights:** did the client create the material, and do customer contracts and policies allow it to be licensed?
- [ ] **Reach:** can you reach the owner, CEO, CFO or authorized representative directly?
- [ ] **Readiness:** would that sponsor consider a one-time payment for an exclusive AI-training license?

The company must also meet the baseline: a company in the U.S., Canada, the EU, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, South Africa, Latin America, the UAE or Saudi Arabia (outside the U.S., Canada and the EU, at least 90% of the data must be in English) with 50+ full-time employees at peak (contractors excluded) and several years of documented operations. Run a preliminary screen with the [company fit checker](/tools/company-fit-checker); the [who qualifies](/who-qualifies) page has the full list.

## How does the introduction work in practice?

1. You register and send the client your referral link, or submit the client through the referral form.
2. SourceX screens the client for size, history, breadth of systems and rights, talking to the sponsor.
3. The client lists its own systems, their years of history and export options in a data inventory. You are not the one compiling it.
4. The client and SourceX agree one net payout and the terms. Nothing is binding until the client signs.
5. SourceX review the opportunity; once the client is deal-ready, they typically respond within about two weeks.
6. Delivery and payment to the client follow an executed agreement and its authorization. A reward becomes payable after SourceX has paid the referred company under its signed agreement and the payout conditions in the program terms are met, including finance approval and your tax and payment details.

You never export, upload or describe confidential records. Do not use admin access you hold for a project to look at data for this purpose.

## What to say to an owner or controller

> "While we plan the migration, keep a full export of the old system. Some companies license operational records to SourceX for a one-time payment and keep ownership. If you want to check whether yours would qualify, I can introduce you to SourceX; you decide everything."

Keep it to one message tied to the project, then let the client lead. The [introduction email builder](/tools/introduction-email-builder) drafts a version you can adapt.

## What do CPA-firm technology partners need to check first?

If you work inside a CPA firm, your firm's fee and independence policies come before any registration. The AICPA Code of Professional Conduct has a [commissions and referral fees rule](https://mn.gov/boa/assets/AICPA%20Code%20of%20Professional%20Conduct_tcm1233-764395.pdf) that restricts commissions for recommending a product or service to a client when the member or firm also performs audit, review or certain other attest work for that client, and that requires disclosure of permitted commissions and referral fees. State boards of accountancy can be stricter. Technology staff who are not licensed may still be bound by the firm's policy.

This is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Confirm with your firm's ethics or risk lead and your state board before acting.

## How do rewards work?

Partners earn 25% of the compensation SourceX actually pays the company you refer, capped at $100,000 per referred company. A reward becomes payable after SourceX has paid the referred company under its signed agreement and the payout conditions in the program terms are met, including finance approval and your tax and payment details. It is never deducted from what the company receives. Read the [program terms](/terms) for current details.

## What should you read next?

[Referral opportunities for accountants and bookkeeping firms](/for/accountants) covers the practice side, and [FP&A consultants](/for/fp-and-a-consultant-referral-opportunities) covers the planning side. For the content of finance records, see [technical accounting and policy memos](/data-types/accounting-policy-memo-examples). Two finance questions clients raise are [costs to fulfill a contract under ASC 340-40](/questions/costs-to-fulfill-a-contract-asc-340-40) and [whether company data is collateral under a blanket lien](/questions/is-data-a-general-intangible-ucc-article-9). For the owner meeting, see [year-end tax planning meetings](/guides/year-end-tax-planning-meeting-business-owner-checklist).

## When not to introduce

- The client is under the size baseline or has a short history.
- Records belong to the client's own clients, as in many outsourced accounting arrangements.
- Archives were deleted or tools were cancelled without an export.
- The firm's policy bars the compensation and you cannot get it cleared.
- Nobody with authority will consider an exclusive license.

## Next step

Add one question to your next migration scoping: "What happens to the old system's history?" If a client has a strong answer, [register as a partner](/register) and make the introduction, or have the owner apply at [sourcex.si/apply](https://sourcex.si/apply).
